3 PERFECT COLOUR COMBINATIONS YOU NEED IN YOUR WARDROBE BLUSH ORANGE AND PINK | HOW TO USE COLOUR WHEEL

“The best colour in the whole world is the one that looks good on you.” Coco Chanel

Pairing colours can either make or break your outfit. So, it’s only natural to feel a little uneasy when experimenting with new tones and partnerships. But, that doesn’t mean you have to stick to plain old head-to-toe black.

Here, I take you through my three favourite variety of colour-coordinated looks. Ready to embrace the rainbow?

ORANGE AND PINK

Pink and orange is the colour combo of summer 2020 and definitely my favourite one!

There’s something about this that simply screams summer. The fusion of the two makes for one truly eye-catching, fun, and vibrant outfit. It’s time to step outside of your comfort zone and start experimenting with colours.

GREEN AND MUSTARD YELLOW

There’s nothing crisper than the smell of freshly cut grass on a warm summer day, and this colour combination is just that. Fresh and clean, green and yellow looks great on most complexions. If you’re warm toned, focus on mustard, khaki and dark green. If you’re cool toned, sharpen up an outfit by adding bright yellows and iridescent greens.

BLUSH PINK AND BEIGE

Nothing says summer more than pastels. Soft pinks may sound subtle, but when styled with the right complementing hue, they can be as eye-catching as a bright pop of colour. This colour combination will remind you of the soft scent of jasmine and a warm summer breeze.

Use the Colour Wheel for Guidance

A colour wheel shows you how colours relate to each other and visually demonstrates the relationship between primary, secondary and tertiary colours. You can use the colour wheel to develop colour schemes for your wardrobe.

Colour wheel

We have three groups of colours, primary, secondary and tertiary.

TIP: In order to separate the warm colours (reds, oranges, yellows) from cool colours (blues, greens, purples) draw a line through the centre of the wheel.

Primary colours are red, yellow and blue (classic pub quiz question) and these are the basis for all other colour. Any colour can be made using a combination of primary colours.

Secondary colours are made by mixing two primary colours from the colour wheel. The results are orange, green and violet. These are centred between the colours mixed to make them on the wheel.

Tertiary colours are made from mixing a primary and secondary colour, for example blue and green become teal, and red and purple mixed together become magenta. Tertiary colours rest between the colours used to form each on the colour wheel.

Now let’s dive into colour wheel combinations – complementary, analogous and triad.

Complementary colours are colours that are across from each other on the colour wheel, such as red and green. This creates a high-contrast, high – drama look. A complementary colour scheme is great for small pops of colour to make items stand out. Pick a colour on the colour wheel then draw a straight line across the colour wheel, this is the colour’s complement.

Analogous colours are colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel, like blue-green, green, and yellow-green. When creating an analogous colour scheme, one colour will dominate, one will support and another will accent.

Triadic colours are colours on the colour wheel that form a triangle. One example of a triadic colour scheme is purple, orange, and green.

Choose a colour on the colour wheel then draw an equilateral triangle to find the two other colours. You will notice that each colour has 3 colours between them to form the triangle.
