We’ve had prints, bows, sheer and ruffles galore and now making a last minute entrance to our summer wardrobe is the broderie anglaise trend.
Associated with England, due to its popularity there in the 19th century, broderie anglaise (French, “English embroidery”) is a whitework needlework technique that incorporates features of embroidery, cutwork and needle lace.
It’s characterized by eyelet patterns composed of round or oval holes which are cut out of the fabric, then bound with overcast or buttonhole stitches.
Broderie anglaise was extremely popular in England between 1840 and 1880 for women’s underclothing and children’s wear. The 1950s and 1960s saw a resurgence in popularity thanks to stars like Brigitte Bardot who wore a dress of gingham and broderie anglaise for her wedding to Jacques Charrier.
Broderie anglaise fashion is usually lightweight, delicate and romantic and therefore perfect for warm weather dressing.
This year, broderie has been given an update with a huge range of hues, more intricate patterns, statement silhouettes and irregular embroidery.
As we spend a lot more time at home due to the pandemic this romantic trend is socially distanced picnics and garden parties perfection. Thanks to slightly heavier nature of broderie anglaise, we can wear this trend all the way till September.
It’s also incredibly versatile and can be mixed and matched with anything from summer sandals and straw bags to a pair of jeans, a chunky cardigan or workman-style boots.
