BRITISH HERITAGE | TWEED JACKET | brown hue | how to wear tweed | how to care for tweed | history of tweed

“Contrary to popular belief, English women do not wear tweed nightgowns” Hermione Gingold

Tweed was all over the catwalks fall and winter 2017, but are we ready to dress like we just stepped out from the countryside house looking like a stuffy English huntsman or huntswoman?

Let’s start with the basics.

History

The origin of tweed goes back for centuries. Originally it was hand woven from wool, creating a sturdy material to protect the wearer from the harsh weather.

Fast forward to the modern day and tweed is available in a variety of ways. It has become more centred on style and look, as opposed to practicality.

If you can find it, it’s still possible to buy tweed jackets made from 100% wool. However, it’s now more common to find a tweed jacket in a blend of different fabrics or materials. This makes them cheaper, and easier to wash. However, it does take away from the authenticity of the piece slightly.

Tweed jackets are great. They are probably one of the most versatile pieces of outerwear fashion that you can add to your wardrobe, for both formal, smart casual and casual outfits. Thanks to its minimal look, tweed is easy to incorporate into your outfits, and if you take care of it, it’ll last you years. Also, you’ll find tweed available in a variety of colours and patterns. Forget about traditional green tweed, and think brown, blue, red and grey tweed that are just as traditional and provide a more versatile pallet to work with.

If you don’t have one already, it’s time to join the tweed revolution. A piece of clothing that people originally saw as stereotypically old or nerdy is now one of the most stylish items we can own.

Caring for Tweed

Back in the day tweed was 100% wool and its main purpose was to keep us warm.  The likelihood of it being washed if it got a few stains was fairly low. Nowadays we are obsessed with washing and cleaning everything but it can be quite tricky when comes to fabrics like tweed or velvet.  Under no circumstances should you throw it in the washing machine. It will shrink and you’ll be left with something unwearable. As with majority of luxe fabrics, dry cleaning is the answer however here are a few tips that could help to freshen up your tweed jacket:

1.You can actually vacuum your tweed jacket to keep it free from dust

2.If you’ve had it stored for a while and it’s smelling a little musty, a good deodoriser will freshen it up without affecting the material

3.Stains can easily be removed with a damp sponge

4.A good clean with a stiff brush from time to time will help keep your jacket looking smart and neat

5.Hang it up properly to keep its shape.

This outfit is such a perfect combination of leather and tweed, all in brown tones. I mentioned in my previous post here how much I love chocolate colour and I’m absolutely thrilled this is one of the Fall 2017 trending hues! My love for tweed blossomed last year when I realized how versatile it is.  It adds a layer of complexity and enhances the texture of any outfit. Aside from colour and texture, what I love about this jacket is how good it pairs with casual pieces like jeans for example.  Love this chameleon quality and always look for pieces I can dress up and down! It pairs just perfect with this Ralph Lauren bag that I purchased during my recent trip to New York City, read more here and here and a pair of fabulous Karen Millen nude satin stilettos.

Guys what do you think about tweed? Old fashioned and nerdy or versatile and stylish? Let me know in the comments box below.

I love tweed fabrics! The oldest tweed maison is Harris tweed in Scotland. They are still around to this very day and laws are in place to protect its heritage and ensure it is still made the traditional way. They supply to many of the high fashion houses. I find the history of topics like this fascinating. Love your outfit so much.
