PURPLE RAIN, THE UNEXPECTED COLOUR TREND TO LIVE UP YOUR WARDROBE

ASOS DESIGN Luxe premium satin one shoulder cape high split maxi dress

“Style is a simple way of saying complicated things.” Jean Cocteau

As the temperatures start to drop, we’re quick to embrace a wardrobe full of elegant neutrals but before you do so, you may want to try one more bright and totally unexpected summer hue – purple.

Purple has long been associated with royalty and its elite status stems from the rarity and cost of the dye originally used to produce it. Phoenician (which is now in modern-day Lebanon) purple dye was extremely expensive, a pound of purple wool cost more than most people earned in a year. Only rulers could afford it so naturally it became the calling card of the rich and powerful.

Purple has also historically been best left to small doses in an outfit. It’s a difficult colour to pull off as a full look. And yet, this didn’t stop me from doing exactly that!

WAYS TO WEAR IT

The best ways to wear purple is either a color block (like purple and white) or a head-to-toe monochrome approach which makes these soft hues a very bold fashion statement.  This is probably my favourite trick, mixing and matching the tints and shades of one colour, for example, lavender and amethyst.

If you struggle to choose a matching hue the colour wheel is super helpful. Read all about the wheel here.

COLOUR PAIRING

This lovely hue is incredibly versatile and looks amazing with pretty much any colour from feminine white, classic black, emerald green, buttery yellow, hot pink to moody dark purple.

PRINTS

You don’t always have to limit yourself to an outfit featuring only one or two hues. Prints help to fuse several colours/shades together to create an arresting look.

Think purple animal-print look… It may be wise to stay away from accessories to avoid introducing more colours and the so not wanted OTT look.

FUN FABRICS

It’s an easy-to-pull-off neutral that still reads edgy, especially when done in fun materials like satin, chiffon or faux fur.

CLASSIC DENIM

For some reason, bright colours and denim work so well together but then denim goes well with almost everything. The denim helps to offset the bright colour and makes the look more appealing and casual chic.

BABY STEPS

If you’re not ready to go all out just yet try accessories. All you need is a splash of colour over your neutrals to stand out.  Accessories could mean anything from earrings to belts, so have fun mixing it up.

Purple is a colour often associated with royalty and nobility so, why not treat yourself like the queen you undoubtedly are and add some purple to your closet?

That is true. Purple was the colour of royalty and nobility. I think I read about that, if I recall well, the reason why purple was so expensive in the past is that they got it from boiling snails and they had to boil tons of them to paint just one meter of fabric.
You look absolutely gorgeous in this purple dress.
    Great tips on styling purple.
