Velvet—the world’s most sumptuous fabric—has taken hold of the Fall/Winter 2017 fashion ranks. This trend has migrated upward onto jumpsuits, blazers, camisoles, and tops. If you can name it, this soft-touch fabric covers it.
It’s one of the trends that comes round again and again. Now, it’s back again and the latest velvet revival isn’t surprising really – apart from how much there is.
Velvet continues to capture our hearts proving to be a red-carpet favourite throughout the colder months and into the early spring.
There’s no escaping autumn’s biggest trends but how to actually wear velvet on the regular? We can be all too quick to associate it with Christmas party dressing.
So how do you take something that’s strongly embedded in evening wear and make it suitable for daylight hours?
Keep scrolling to see how I styled this cool Fall’17 trend that anyone and everyone can wear.
1. First, keeping an open mind and parking everything you think you know about velvet is a good place to start.
2. Mixing fabrics is always a great idea to add some casual vibe. Consider trading in your go-to T-shirt for a plush top instead as I did, and dressing it up with a pair of non-velvet trousers (even jeans) — proving that the material has what it takes to give any outfit a little oomph.
3. An easy way to carry velvet casually with you wherever you go is to trade your leather bag for a velvet one. A velvet bag is the perfect way to touch on the trend without venturing too far from your minimalist aesthetic.
4. While the velvet trend has manifested itself in quite a few iterations this season, without a doubt, my favourite has to be the shoe form. From sandals, to boots, to pumps, the statement-making style went straight from the F/W 17 runways to our favourite stores. You don’t need deep pockets to tap into the velvet shoe trend. Wear them with bare legs if Fall weather allows, or chose a pair of nice trousers to keep the look minimalistic. A dark wine colour or royal blue will add interest to your most basic looks.
Guys trust me, you’re going to be seeing this luxe fabric everywhere this season, so it’s time we embrace it! I love this incredibly soft fabric and I intend to have a lot of fun with it this season.
