“A woman’s dress should be like a barbed-wire fence: serving its purpose without obstructing the view.” Sophia Loren
Everyone has been talking, including myself, about transitioning our wardrobes from Summer to Fall here and here. Today I’m going to talk about how to transition your look from day to night in a few simple tricks and without a need to swap your whole outfit.
We all know that running from work to play and everywhere in between all day long may be murder on your feet, but it doesn’t have to tax your style.
I’m a chartered accountant and very often I work long hours. When I still have the energy left to go out it’s always straight from work to dinner or an evening at the theatre. It’s quite important to me that on those days I can quickly transition my daytime outfit into a night time one. For those of you who want an easy transition for happy hour or dinner without having to put too much time into changing – this is for you!
Invest in Versatile Pieces
Whether it’s a midi black dress, cigarette pants or a pencil skirt, when it comes to transitioning an outfit from day to night, the more versatile a piece is, the easier and quicker it will be to style. In most cases you will only need to throw a jacket on for the office look and maybe tone down that pair of stilettos. The right base dress can easily take you from corporate to cocktail ready in a matter of minutes.
This stand out dress has great transitional ability. It’s a great elegant and stylish piece for the office but also perfect choice for a wedding or a night out with your girls. Beautifully fitted bodycon silhouette that hugs your figure in all the right places. The flirty fan detail adds a playful finishing touch.
What’s more classically day-to-night than a go-to blazer? Throw one on to automatically dress down this gorgeous silk dress for a 9 to 5 look (in my case more likely to be 8-7pm).
Don’t Change Clothes, Change Accessories
I always keep a couple of spare pairs of stilettos, a clutch bag and some jewelry in my desk at work to instantly dress up even the blandest office ensemble. On a night out just quickly swap that classic black pair of pumps for sexy stilettos or a pair of strappy heels. Transitioning to heels will instantly give your outfit a dressier, more pulled together look. And finally, ditch your roomy day time tote for a colorful clutch or glitzy side bag for a more polished and party-ready vibe.
Revive your make-up or not
It’s entirely up to you – however the same makeup doesn’t always work both day and night. Once the sun goes down you’ll need to kick it up a notch.
Use a blotting sheet to remove any oils that may have built up during the day, wipe away any smeared eye makeup, and touch up your foundation and concealer if needed. I hardly ever re-do foundation (primarily because I hardly ever wear one) but if so make sure you don’t overdo it by sticking another very often unnecessary layer on the top of your morning one.
For a sultry evening look (if that’s the one you desire), use a darker shade of your daytime shadow to really enhance your eyes or just skip this step completely.
To take your pout from day to night, apply a lip color that’s a few shades darker than your natural lip color and top it off with a high-shine lip gloss.
You are now ready to paint the town red.
Guys it takes less than 10 minutes to transition this fabulous dress. The classic shape is playful yet refined, making it a sophisticated choice for both day and night and it’s also available in pink.
