“There is nothing more beautiful than a sunset, viewed over a glass of chilled Champagne.” Jared M. Brown

For those who know me it won’t come as a surprise how much I enjoy my food paired with a nice glass of wine or champagne. That one glass can have some powerful transformative qualities. It can add romance to a dinner for two, add a sense of occasion to a personal achievement, and instantly turn any given moment into a celebration.

You may think what does she actually know about wines or champagnes? The answer is not as much as I would like to and I certainly won’t become a sommelier any time soon. However, I have travelled the world a bit and have tasted wines and bubbles from more than just a few cellars and would love to share some of my experiences with you.

I hope my scribbling will not only encourage or educate some of you (including myself), but maybe even become an inspiration to experiment with new wines and champagnes.

I also would like to introduce a different perspective to just having a glass of white, red or a bubbly rose on a night out! I hope you are ready to share this journey with me and rediscover familiar wines and champagnes together, as well as to explore those with unexpected aromas and flavours.

As the theme of the month is the glory of Champagne (in other words, the colour itself and also in a glass of bubbly) I naturally decided to make my very first lifestyle blog about one of my favourite bubbles the Cuvée Rosé Laurent-Perrier.

I think we all agree that the idea of Champagne conjures up feelings of good living, elegance and sociability. It’s funny when you think about it but Champagne is probably the only alcoholic beverage that you can drink in the morning and not be considered a raving alcoholic.

La Cuvée Rosé was created in 1968. It is characterized by its pale salmon in colour, with precise, crisp aromas of strawberries, redcurrants, raspberries and black cherries. It has fine bubbles with persistent mousse, and prominent flavours of soft red berry fruit, with a well defined wild cherry aspect.

Here are some facts that you may or may not know about the Cuvée Rosé Laurent-Perrier.

Brief History

Laurent Perrier is a family-owned Champagne house with a long and rich history dated back to 1812. The founder Alphonse Pierlot left the house and company to his cellar master Eugene Laurent in his will. After his death, his widow Mathilde Emilie Perrier added her name to the company, making it Vve Laurent-Perrier. Under her governance, the house enjoyed tremendous success, however due to the outbreak of the WWI, that success was short-lived. After the death of Mathilde Emilie Perrier, it wasn’t long before the company got sold to Marie-Louise Lanson de Nonancourt in 1939.

Marie-Louise Lanson de Nonancourt, who managed the company during the Second World War, once hid 100,000 bottles behind a wall to protect them from German soldiers. A couple of years later one of her sons, Army sergeant Bernard de Nonancourt helped break into Hitler’s retreat in the Bavarian Alps where he discovered half a million bottles of wine. Among them were several hundred cases of very expensive Champagne that he had watched being stolen five years earlier!

In 1945, as the WWII was ending, Bernard de Nonancourt, started an apprenticeship that provided him with all the needed knowledge about wine and winemaking, which earned him the right to lead the house 3 years later.

This was the main point of expansion of the Laurent Perrier House that led the house to its glory as we know it today. In the later years, the house became well known and respected for its selection of excellent wines and champagnes, including the Laurent Perrier Rose Champagne.

Prior to 1968, making non-vintage rosé champagne was virtually unthinkable. It was in the midst of a cultural revolution that the visionary Bernard de Nonancourt gave it its credentials.

The preparation

Using only the highest quality Pinot Noir grapes (100%), this is one of the few rosé champagnes that is made by drawing the juice from black grapes in the vat, instead of simply blending red and white wines. This gives it the highly expressive bouquet, extraordinary depth and freshness, and delicious red berry flavours that have made it a benchmark for all rosé champagnes around the world.

The Bottle

When Bernard de Nonancourt launched Cuvée Rosé Laurent-Perrier in 1968, he decided to present his creation in a uniquely distinctive bottle to magnify this very special cuvee, which reflects the bottles made in the time of King Henry IV.
These days, Cuvée Rosé Laurent-Perrier is sold in an extremely elegant presentation case reminiscent of the delicate colour of the wine.

Wine/food pairings

Served at a temperature of 8-10°C, it delivers up its rich aromas and pairs with many foods, from starters to desserts. Its aromatic depth makes it ideal for pairing with marinated raw fish, grilled prawns, exotic dishes and desserts with red fruits. Those who are more adventurous can try it with Asian or Indian cuisine.

Glasses and Serving

Many can argue that it’s not important what glass is used however the shape plays an important role in the sense-experience of a fine champagne. This is why Laurent-Perrier recommends serving Cuvée Rosé in tulip-shaped glasses rather than the more traditional flutes to enjoy the full benefit of its heady aromas.
