Pearls, officially the world’s oldest gem, have been worn as jewellery for centuries. They don’t necessarily have the sparkle of diamonds but they are undeniably precious. The rarity of the (natural) pearl, formed as an oyster’s reaction to an irritant, has made it an object of wonder and value since ancient times.
